Three new organisations sign the Support Agreement
Rome 13.03.2013

In the Art Deco Presidential Room of Roma Termini Railway Station, three new Italian organisations signed the Support Agreement to the European Charter for the development of social initiatives in train stations, at the presence of Mauro Moretti, CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and President of the CER. By signing the Agreement, ANCI, the National Association of Italian Municipality, the Comunità di Sant’Egidio, one of the most important actors against poverty and social exclusion, and the Associazione Centro Astalli, the Italian branch of the JRC – Jesuit Refugee Service, have strengthened their collaboration with the Italian railway company, and therefore with Gare Européenne et Solidarité.

ANCI is partner of the ONDS – National Observatory on poverty and solidarity in Italian railway stations since its creation, and contributed to enlarge the commitment of Italian Municipalities in specific social actions in railway areas. Comunità di Sant’Egidio, a well-know charity very active also at international level for interreligious dialogue and peace keeping, provides assistance to homeless people in railway stations and keeps alive the memory of Modesta Valenti, a homeless woman who died 30 years ago, whose death signed the turning point in supporting strategies for marginalised people. Associazione Centro Astalli works with political refugees and asylum seekers, and runs the Refugee Center Pedro Arrupe in a former Ferrhotel, company lodgings where Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane used to host its personnel overnight in Rome.

Several members of the network, gathered in Rome for the periodical Steering Committee, took part to the ceremony.
